Job Description: Veterinary Nursing - Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician
Position Overview:
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the veterinary team in providing high-quality care and treatment to injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, requiring a strong passion for wildlife conservation and the ability to handle and care for various animal species. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician works closely with veterinarians, veterinary nurses, and other team members to ensure the well-being and successful rehabilitation of wildlife.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide daily care and husbandry for wildlife patients, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and ensuring a safe and clean environment.
2. Administer medications, treatments, and rehabilitation plans as prescribed by the veterinary team.
3. Monitor and record the health status, behavior, and progress of wildlife patients, reporting any changes or concerns to the veterinary team promptly.
4. Assist in capturing, restraining, and handling wildlife for medical procedures, examinations, and vaccinations, prioritizing animal welfare and minimizing stress.
5. Perform basic diagnostic procedures, such as collecting samples, running tests, and recording results accurately.
6. Prepare and assist with surgical procedures, including anesthesia monitoring, surgical instrument handling, and post-operative care.
7. Maintain detailed and organized records of treatments, medications, and procedures performed on wildlife patients.
8. Educate and provide guidance to volunteers and interns on proper wildlife handling, care, and safety protocols.
9. Collaborate with external wildlife organizations, government agencies, and animal control departments to ensure compliance with regulations and permits.
10. Assist in developing and implementing wildlife rehabilitation protocols and procedures, following best practices and ethical standards.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine or related field from an accredited institution.
2. Prior experience in wildlife rehabilitation or veterinary medicine is highly desirable.
3. Strong knowledge of wildlife species, their behavior, and their specific care requirements.
4. Excellent animal handling skills, including proper restraint techniques for various wildlife species.
5. Proficient in administering medications, injections, and treatments to wildlife patients.
6. Ability to perform basic diagnostic procedures and interpret laboratory results.
7. Familiarity with surgical procedures, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative care in wildlife.
8. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining accurate records.
9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
10. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
11. Understanding of wildlife conservation principles and commitment to ethical wildlife rehabilitation practices.
